Kugiran2 Indie Malaysia. Pro, ori or none??!!

Band feveret gua!!!!! Semestinya The Times.

I've read some posts about the the rise of the Malaysian Indie Music. I'm glad to say that, after years of monopoly and 'invasion' by Indonesian bands, finally they have found their match......... our very own homegrown talents, of course.

However, no matter how great our bands are, they usually suffered great oppositions.............. from our own people!!!! Not only have there still a severe lacking in support of our homegrown talents, some even look down on them with contempt. The reason: they think most of our bands are not 'original' and also does not have any background in formal music training. Hmmm........

"Aiyoh! Sounds very British/American/Indonesian la. Not ori at all."

"You call this Malaysian music? What an Indonesian/British/American copy-cat!!!"

"What is this bullshit? Learn to read music la. Ada ati nak buat muzik, tak reti baca muzik."

"You call yourself musician, ka? Don't make me laugh, la. You don't even know basic theory, want to lecture me about music."

"You know, all of those Indonesian, British and American bands you guys idolize, they all got study music. That's why they are successful. They have the knowledge of theory in their heads, unlike you people, only know how to make noise."

Take a look at the dialogues above. Sounds familiar? Those are some of the 'excuses' our typical 'open-minded' Malaysians spit on our talents. Sure, most of them did not have formal music training, what more to say, be able to read music. It's true that some of them might sound like Indonesian, British or American. Perhaps even the combination of all three mentioned earlier. But, hey! Originality does not come easy. After all, there's only 12 notes.

These awesome guys have put up their effort to create their artwork and share them with others, not for fame nor fortune, but it is all in the name of passion. It's okay if you don't enjoy their artwork. You can choose not to listen to it. After all, everyone has different preferences in a lot of things, music especially. But, what pisses me off is that most people justify their reasons based on lack of originality. I mean, c'mon! How original should our bands be? Don't these people how difficult it is to make music?

Know what, if anyone of you out there think that our bands are not original enough and are in need of massive improvements, I challenge you to to write a song. Not just a song, but a completely original song. Original in a sense that it must not have any form of similarity with any existing songs today. See what I mean? Even if you manage to compose a song and you manage to convince a group of people that your song is original, there will always be someone who can, somehow, relate your song to any song out there. I've been through that before, thinking that I've written an original song, only to have my happiness shattered when my sister played a Chrissette Michelle song which, surprisingly, sound similar to my song, though not obvious.

Oh, and speaking of those with formal training background, I don't really mind about them. In fact, I really admire these people because they have what it takes to take their art to the next level. But, I see it as more as an advantage than a requirement. And, about those B.A.B.I(Basically American/British/Indonesian) bands, I'm sorry I have to break the news to those who think that all of these bands studied music in some music institution. While bands like The Click Five and Dream Theater studied in Berklee(which by the way, is the most awesome music college in the world), a majority of those B.A.B.I bands don't even know how to read standard notation, what more to say, studying in some music college. But still, some of these bands rock!!!!!!! So are our bands here, in Malaysia.

So, in the end, it's not about how original or how professional these guys are, but it's about how they can reflect themselves in their art. Well, I'm not gonna end my post with "Please support local music" cos' the support will come naturally, provided the band itself is awesome.

Therefore, I salute bands like Hujan, Meet Uncle Hussain, The Times and Butterfingers kerana mengharumkan nama negara. I thank you.
